Chichen Itza is a Maya city in the Mexican state of Yucatan, about 200 kilometers west of Cancun and 120 kilometers east of Merida. The name comes from Yucatec Maya and translates roughly as "at the mouth of the well of the Itza," a reference to the Sacred Cenote at the northern edge of the site.
